| Biota                    | The living organisms, plant and animal, occupying a place           |
|                          | together, such as marine biota, terrestrial biota.                  |

| Chronic                  | Lasting a long time or recurring often. Said of a disease, and      |
|                          | distinguished from acute.                                           |

| Ephemeral                | Short-lived or of brief duration.                                   |

| Eutrophication           | The process of nutrient enrichment, usually by nitrates and         |
|                          | phosphates, in lake ecosystems, such that the productivity of       |
|                          | the system ceases to be limited by the availability of nutrients.   |
|                          | The rapid increase in nutrient levels stimulates 'algal blooms'     |
|                          | which can deplete oxygen levels severely.                           |

| Fecal Coliform Bacteria  | The presence of this bacteria indicates the potential for other,    |
|                          | perhaps pathological, bacteria.                                     |
